Andrea Zonn and Alison Brown in Illinois
Andrea Zonn, Alison Brown at Merlfestfest 2004 (C) John Cutliffe 2004Here is a concert I would definitely try to get to. Two of my favorite women in music today, Alison Brown and Andrea Zonn will be performing a one off evening of music and conversation at the University of Illinois on November 17th .

This has the potential to be a very interesting and entertaining evening as it will dig deep into both the oral tradition and women active in the Nashville Music scene.
Both these women have a great insight into this world with Andrea being one of the most sought after session musicians in Nashville . She has played with the likes of Lyle Lovett and Vince Gill in recent years. She has also more recently toured with James Taylor and Alison Brown's band and as if that wasn't enough has released a wonderful solo album called Love Goes On which has earned her great acclaim all over the world.

Alison too is an established figure in the music world. Alison has taken the 5 string banjo to new musical places from Jazz to Celtic and has also worked with some of the finest musicians in the world including Stuart Duncan, Alison Krauss and Vince Gill. It is as a solo artist and composer that she has found her place Her first solo album, Simple Pleasures, which was produced by David Grisman was nominated for a Grammy.

Not content with being one of the best musicians playing in America today Alison and husband Garry West also run Compass Records a Nashville based label that has one of the most diverse rosters of any record company in the world.

Both these performers have a vast amount of experience and knowledge to share and so this is a very important show and one I hope they can build on and take to many other venues worldwide. I think there would be a great audience for this on university campuses and in theaters all over the country as well as some select festivals. Even if you have no interest in the conversational side, the musicianship will blow you away.

As well as the concert there are a couple of other items of interest happening on that day. Alison will be giving a lecture to the business school and Andrea will be holding a fiddle workshop for fiddlers of all ages.

Then that night a special moment for Andrea and her family when her mother make a dedication to Paul Martin Zonn, Andrea's late father who was a highly respected and well known musician as well as the chair of the Music Theory and Composition Department of the University of Illinois. Paul Zonn's music and papers will be officially donated to the University during the evening.

So any of you in the Illinois area with an interest in the great music and musicians of America , should try to get along to this show as it will have a little something for everyone from the music buff to the causal listener.
