From the Cradle to the Page
A
new book just published highlights the way Irish music in all it's forms
has swept across the globe in the last few decades. To get a feel for
how this tidal wave has come about author Alan
Swan has talked to some of the
foremost musicians in Irish music today.
The book is not just about out
Irish traditional music although that is well documented here with contributions
from Luka Bloom, Christy Moore, Jimmy McCarthy,
Ronan O'Snodaigh, Mairead Ni Maonaigh and Paul
Brady.
In fact there are more than 70 of Irelands
finest who have told stories of their own journeys in our musical heritage
and shared memories of the road with us. From Classical to Rock musicians
like Damian Rice, The Frames, The Cranberries and Jim
Corr all have their
own slant on Irish music history.
The proceeds from the book will go to
a good cause too.
Fighting
Blindness has been in existence
since 1983. It is a small but dynamic charity made up of families and
individuals affected by progressive blindness. The charity is determined
to investigate every avenue where a realistic hope of finding a cure
exists. The projects it funds are at the cutting edge of international
research and have become global leaders in the search for treatments
for blindness. 65,000 Irish adults and children are currently losing
their sight to progressive blinding conditions known as retinal degenerations.
Funds raised through the sale of this book will ensure this vital work
is maintained and developed, bringing hope of a bright future to those
currently affected by blindness and to future generations.
24-year-old
author Alan Swan worked in commercial radio
as a presenter after studying in NUI Maynooth. He's now working behind
the scenes in music research. Having built a reputation as a broadcaster
passionate about supporting new talent, Alan recently won a 'New Irish
Music Industry Award'. This is his first book.
From the Cradle to the Stage is much
more than just a stocking filler and will be a must on the discerning
music lover's bookshelf.
