Dervish to be honoured by Sligo
Irish traditional
band Dervish are to be honoured by their native town Sligo . W.B Yeats
said that Sligo had most influenced his life and certainly the area is
steeped in music and cultural history. Sligo Town itself in more recent
times has been a great center for all kinds of music and has produced
many great bands from Those Nervous animals to Dervish.
Dervish have always been proud of their home town and
now are set to be rewarded for being its great unofficial ambassadors.
Recently they organised a weekend of concerts to remember thier late
soundman Finn Corrigan which featured some of the biggest names in Irish
music visiting the town.
At the first meeting of 2004 of the Sligo Borough
Council, it was decided to give the seven members of Dervish "The
Freedom of the City of Sligo ".
This is the highest civic honour that a local Council can give. This
honour was bestowed on Dervish for being one of the most sucessful Irish
traditional music groups of our time and also for bringing their local
Sligo style of music to a worldwide audience. This honour has been only
given to a small number of people throughtout the years in the local
region.
The date for the official ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks
Dervish have a brilliant new album out called Spirit and will be touring
the US soon to promote it.
