Flook on a Roll
Flook have
been around for a while. It was 1995 in fact when they first started
playing together. Brian
Finnegan, Micheal McGoldrick and Sarah Allen sowed
the seeds of that first lineup adding Ed Boyd on
guitar and naming the band at the end of a series of shows under the
name Three Nations Flutes. I had seen Sarah many times in the wonderful
Barely Works and had even sat in the corner clutching my guitar in fear
at session where Ed Boyd was playing. I also had seen Michael
McGoldrick many many times so the core of the band were familiar to me. Yet the
first time I caught them live they still blew me away. This was something
new and special and was as exciting as any music I had heard in many
a year. Michael eventually left the band and John
Joe Kelly was drafted
as a full time member to provide the bands backbone.
The great thing
is not only have the band stayed fresh but have evolved into
an even more energetic music machine.
Their
last album Rubai was a huge
success last year receiving great critical acclaim and included guests
like the wonderful Rory McLeod. It was named
best CD os 2002 by Folkworld and was at
number one in Irish
Music Magazine's Dublin chart in October of that year.
It was also nominated as Album of the Year in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards
