Johnny Cunningham Tribute

Happy New Year to all, and as we begin the New Year, and John returns to us from the wilds of Scotland, a fantastic opportunity to hear some incredible musicians celebrate the life and music of renowned Scottish fiddler Johnny Cunningham is just around the corner, and I had to tell you all about it!

Johnny CunninghamJohnny was a personal friend, and his loss is truly felt every time I frequent one of his old haunts around New York City, and I can almost hear the plaintive strains of his fiddle still. I think there is no better tribute to a musician, than a group of his peers coming together to celebrate his life and work, and a stellar group has announced a mini-tour to do just that.

Johnny's brother Phil Cunningham , on accordion, will be joined by the amazing Kevin Burke on fiddle, Seamus Egan of Solas on flute, tenor banjo, tin whistle, mandolin;, singing sensation Susan McKeown on vocals and Aidan Brennan on guitar. This is quite a lineup of talent all of whom have had a close connection to Johnny and his work. This should be quite an incredible evening of music and I'm sure that a saucy story or two of Johnny's exploits over the years will be told. It's only appropriate given his talent as a storyteller that rivaled his fiddling in terms of entertaining an audience.

So, all those of you whose lives were touched by Johnny, here's a chance to rejoice and celebrate him, and for those of you may never have heard his music before, come on down and hear what you've been missing.

I'll be reviewing the show on Febuary 5th at Town Hall in New York, and hope to see some of you there.
