The
Corrs - New CD Borrowed Heaven Out Soon Just a few years back in London I had organized a party for Altan after a big festival that had featured some of the best Irish talent in the world. Such was the respect that people in music have for Altan that many other showbiz style parties were ignored and our party ended up being a who's who in Irish music. My favorite moment was at the bar itself at about 3am where out of no-where a “superband” seemed to form and included Moya from Clannad, Mairead from Altan, Mary Black and on guitar, from the Corrs, Jim Corr. Over the years I have seen the Corrs in many such laid back sessions putting their hearts and souls into our great traditional music. This is how they grew up; back in Dundalk , all practicing and learning together with traditional music as the solid background to the many influences that would mould them into the classy and polished pop band they are today. They still use those influences and the traditional
instruments on stage, even sometimes going into sets of almost purely
Irish traditional music as part of the live show. From the opening track Summer Sunshine, which is coincidentally the single release, they show great imagination in the arrangements. Any of the songs could be put out as a single with strong melodies and hooks that will have mainstream radio here keeping the band on heavy rotation. But there is so much more underneath than three glamorous women and “that other guy on guitar” You can tell that this isn't music manufactured and boxed by the record company. This is years of hard work by a tight family unit who have embraced many outside influences and found a huge international market for their sound. Of course the look of the girls and their smoldering yet innocent “Irish Colleen” image doesn't hurt things at all. but without the genuine underlying talent the band wouldn't have made it past the first few of their 11 years together. As it is the Corrs are on a roll and amid all the great arrangements there are plenty of musical reminders that the band know exactly where their music comes from and on the last beautiful track Silver Strand they close the whole show on a very Irish note indeed. This CD is not for pure traditional fans but is certainly a good choice for your teens who think all that diddly diddly music you listen is for old folkies.
