Tim O'Brien does it again

Tin O'Brien (c) John Cutliffe 2003Tim O'Brien wants the best of all musical worlds. And why not? He is a master of many already. A founding member of Hot Rize he was part of one of the best and most innovative Bluegrass bands that ever existed. His project The Crossing highlighted the great connection between the music of America and its Celtic cousin back in Europe and was a milestone in musical history.

Even live I have seen Tim in many setting and collaborations. The last time I saw him he was playing with The Chieftains on the American leg of their tour and was as comfortable there as he was donned in a snazzy suit playing the purest of bluegrass at last year's Merlefest.

Tim's latest recording is called Traveler and is self produced. It features 12 new tracks written by Tim and certainly shows off his talents as a songwriter as well as a player. The album is a feast for the ears with a myriad of styles and influences shining through the tight production.

My personal favorite so far is I've Endured. Of course that will change as all the tracks have a little something that draws you in every time you hear it. The songs are strong and the playing is top notch and provided by some well known guests like Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck and our own John Doyle. With that sort of talent lending itself to your project it is hard to fail.

Tim is on the road right now showcasing the new stuff and you can catch him at the following venues for the rest of October and into November
